Along the coastline of the Athens Riviera, on the way to Sounion<\/a>, you will encounter beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and golden sandy shores. Many of these beaches are organized, which means you will either need to sit on one of the sun loungers or beach bars or find a vacant spot to set up your own umbrella and beach mat.<\/p>\n

However, if you are seeking more peaceful settings to enjoy the beach, we have gathered five beaches up to Sounion that will make your summer excursion even more enjoyable – and in some cases, even more private.<\/p>\n

Limanakia<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you pass through the center of Vouliagmeni and gradually head towards Varkiza, you will see small coves emerging at every turn, with azure waters and wild beauty that is rarely found elsewhere nearby. The Limanakia have been a characteristic meeting point for swimmers in Athens for years, rushing to secure their spot on the rocks and spend the whole day sunbathing while gazing at the horizon.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of choices, as indeed there are many beautiful coves, but we cannot fail to recommend that you sit where Lefteris\u2019s kantina is located, which has been operating since the 1960s and has hosted people of all ages and from all over Attica. From there, you can purchase the essentials for your stay by the sea, and then you can move a little further with your group to find the most picturesque spots and set up.<\/p>\n

Skalakia Altheas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Continuing the journey (always heading towards Sounio), just before reaching Lagonissi, you will find the beach called Skalakia Altheas (meaning Althea Steps). If you decide to go down the steps, it will lead you to an earthly paradise. Azure-green waters, hidden in a small cove, sandy beach, and a view of the rocky islet opposite (called \u201cDouni\u201d and you can approach it literally by walking on the water, starting from the adjacent cove) create the most summery scenery you can imagine.<\/p>\n

The beach is relatively small, so make sure to go early to secure a spot. You won\u2019t find shade here, so remember to come equipped with all the essentials: umbrella, beach mat, and hat. If you are a fan of exploration, bring your mask and dive into the seabed to discover it – especially near the rocks on the right and left, it\u2019s just what you need.<\/p>\n

To find it, remember that at the 35th kilometer of the Athens-Sounio road, after passing the church of Agia Marina, you will see the sign \u201cAlthea\u201d on your right. Once the beach had a designated parking area, which is now closed, so we recommend parking your car in the narrow streets just above the coastal road. There is an underground passage that you can safely cross to head towards the sea.<\/p>\n

Heaven Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n

After passing the Grand Resort Lagonissi, the first beach you will find on your right is Kiteza Beach, also known as Heaven, due to the famous beach bar that operated there until some years ago. Today, it is completely unorganized and ideal for lounging there for hours until you see the magnificent sunset, with the sun disappearing right on the horizon in front of you.<\/p>\n

On the left side of the beach, there are some rocks and small boats that create an island-like vibe. Additionally, there is plenty of space to play beach rackets, while the azure waters will keep you inside for a long time, allowing you to swim deep. This is a great place for a large group of people looking for space and simplicity, as well as for families with children since the waters are shallow and suitable for playing.<\/p>\n

Skalakia Anavyssou<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next beach stop we would recommend for you is Skalakia Anavyssou (meaning Anavyssos Steps). It is a beach of pure, unparalleled beauty that will truly make you feel like you are on an island. The waters are wonderful and predispose you to spend endless hours diving. Remember to bring everything you need here as well, as you won\u2019t find any shade to sit in. At the top of the rock above, there is also the Nissos beach bar, where you can get the essentials.<\/p>\n

Just a heads up, it may be the most challenging beach to locate. Driving along the coastal road, at some point near Anavyssos, you will come across Estate 48. This is the only landmark we can give you because a few meters before it, you must turn right inside, park your car, and head towards the edge where you will find the famous steps leading down to the beach.<\/p>\n

KAPE beach<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last but not least, a stone\u2019s throw away from Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon, KAPE is a must for a day by the sea. Located in Legrena<\/a>, it is the furthest option we can offer you to feel like you are escaping far from the city and all its hustle and bustle.<\/p>\n

Once again, you will need to descend about a hundred steps and step onto the small white pebbles that lead to the beautiful waters below. Don\u2019t let the number 100 stress you out. The view as you descend and the beach itself will more than compensate for it. Find a spot on the beach, close to the rocks to secure some shade, and be ready for endless dives, with the backdrop of the islet of Patroklos visible in the distance.<\/p>\n
