The August full moon is the most atmospheric date of the summer, and the coastline of the Athenian Riviera transforms into the ultimate setting to experience it. From the port of Piraeus and the seaside spots of Glyfada, Voula and Varkiza, all the way to the southernmost tip of Attica, the options stretch across the entire coastal front. Whether you are looking for free open-air cinema screenings under the stars at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), cocktails by the sea, or simply a quiet \u201cbalcony\u201d with an unobstructed view of the full moon, the Southern Suburbs of Athens have their own way of celebrating the most beautiful night of August.<\/p>\n

Events under the August full moon in the Southern Suburbs of Athens<\/h2>\n

At the SNFCC<\/strong>, the established Full Moon Film Marathon<\/strong> returns, transforming the Stavros Niarchos Park\u2019s Great Lawn into an impressive open-air cinema. Under the open Attic sky, an all-night marathon dedicated to Stanley Kubrick will be screened for free, featuring four of his iconic films (Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining) shown consecutively from 21:00 until the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n

As part of the Glyfada Festival, the Third Marina<\/strong> transforms into an atmospheric meeting point by the sea, screening the film The Roses<\/strong> with free admission. The movie screening against a backdrop of moored boats and the illuminated coastline provides the perfect excuse for an evening stroll.<\/p>\n

In Voula, The C Beach<\/strong> celebrates the night of the August moon with a Full Moon BBQ Dinner<\/strong>, which also serves as the grand finale of its themed gastronomic evenings this year. In an idyllic setting on the sand, chefs Dorina Demai and Lazaros Stamoulis are preparing a live grilling menu featuring options such as Wagyu Tacos and a refreshing Mediterranean Burrata Salad, accompanied by fine wines and live music in collaboration with Tartaruga.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on Varkiza<\/strong>, the \u201cCHEERS TO BEERS \u2013 Beer Festival\u201d<\/strong> takes center stage. The programme includes tastings of dozens of Greek and international beer labels, street food options and live performances on stage, while the evening can end perfectly with a relaxed stroll along Varkiza\u2019s seafront promenade under the moonlight.<\/p>\n

Naturally, the full moon night also has a historical dimension, as a total of 126 archaeological sites, historic sites, monuments and museums will open their doors to the public with free admission. In our area, the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus<\/strong> (next to the Ancient Theatre of Zea) is hosting the free musical event \u201cMoonlit Melodies\u201d<\/strong> at 21:00 (arrival time 20:30). The \u201cAENAON\u201d String Quartet of the Athens State Orchestra, together with mezzo-soprano Ioanna Forti, will present a lyrical programme featuring classical compositions and beloved Greek songs (please note that the museum\u2019s indoor exhibition area will not be open to visitors).<\/p>\n

Sounio: Full moon views of the Temple of Poseidon<\/h2>\n

In recent years, unlike other archaeological sites across the country, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio has not remained open until midnight on the night of the August Full Moon for protection and safety reasons (according to its summer opening hours, the site closes at sunset).<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the setting remains breathtaking from the surrounding spots. You can enjoy the moonrise from:<\/p>\n

  • The caf\u00e9-restaurant next to the archaeological site: Located just outside the enclosure, it offers a privileged view of the illuminated temple and the sea.<\/li>\n
  • The hills and beach of Sounio: Outside the enclosure or from the nearby seaside spots and tavernas, watching the moon rise behind the temple\u2019s columns offers a unique spectacle.<\/li>\n
  • The lay-bys along the coastal road: From Legrena to Sounio, there are many spots along the roadside where you can park safely and watch the full moonlight shimmering over the Saronic Gulf.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Tip: If you are planning to make it all the way to Sounio, make sure you set off early (well before sunset), as traffic on this particular evening is especially heavy and parking is difficult.<\/p>\n

    For those looking for quieter moments, away from organised events, the Southern Suburbs of Athens offer many more wonderful natural vantage points. Pani Hill<\/strong> in Ano Kalamaki stands out for its panoramic views, as does Serron & Ierapetras Square<\/strong> in Ano Glyfada, a balcony at the foothills of Mount Hymettus overlooking the entire coastal front.
