Her career actually began right here in Greece, with InterContinental Hotels Group, before taking her to South Africa and then Paris. Today, as Director of Sales & Marketing of the first One&Only in Greece, she is a member of the judging panel of the inaugural Athens Riviera Luxury Awards (17 September, One&Only Aesthesis, Glyfada).

A journey around the world before coming back

When she talks about her career path, Gauthier starts from the beginning, and the beginning was here:

“My professional journey in hospitality spans more than 20 years and has been shaped by different markets, cultures and international hotel organisations. I started my career in Greece with InterContinental Hotels Group and then worked for several years in South Africa, initially as Director of Sales & Marketing at Hyatt Regency Johannesburg and later as Regional Director of Sales & Marketing for Minor Hotels, with responsibility for 11 hotels across 9 countries in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean. Before returning to Greece, I was Global Sales Director Luxury, Leisure, Lifestyle at Hyatt, based in Paris, representing more than 550 luxury and lifestyle hotels worldwide and working with leading luxury travel networks, agencies and strategic partners. This experience gave me the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the international luxury traveller, as well as the way leading luxury destinations position themselves and compete on a global level. Since October 2024, I have been at One&Only Aesthesis as Director of Sales & Marketing, responsible for the resort’s overall commercial strategy, sales, marketing and international positioning. For me, returning to Greece and especially to the Athens Riviera was a very conscious choice: the opportunity to leverage international experience in a destination that is currently at an extremely important stage of its evolution.”

Few people in the Greek hospitality market have seen so many different luxury systems from such close range, and that is precisely what she brings with her now as she considers what luxury means along the Greek coastline. This is not the typical case of an executive who grew within one chain and climbed the ranks in the same market. She has experienced cultures where luxury means a safari lodge on the savannah, markets where it means a boutique hotel in the heart of a European capital, and now she is being called upon to define it once again for a coastline where the Acropolis is just a stone’s throw from the sea.

From city break to standalone luxury destination

When it comes to the evolution of the Athens Riviera as a luxury hospitality destination, Gauthier sees a clear turning point:

“I believe that the Athens Riviera is going through one of the most interesting periods in its modern history. For many years, Athens was seen mainly as a city break or as a stopover before heading to the Greek islands. That is now changing fundamentally. The arrival of international luxury hospitality brands, the significant investments being made in the area, the upgrading of gastronomy, wellness and yachting, as well as the overall development of the coastline, are gradually creating a complete luxury destination. Most importantly, in my view, the Riviera has a competitive advantage that is difficult to replicate: it combines the sea, culture, history, contemporary lifestyle and a global capital within the same destination. You can be at a seaside resort while having the Acropolis and the historic centre of Athens just a short distance away. This is an extremely strong proposition for the international luxury traveller.”

Speed, quality and the growing competition

The biggest challenge, she says, is not the construction. It is not even attracting investors, who have been coming increasingly easily in recent years. It is what comes next, when the building is ready and the visitor already has higher expectations than they did a decade ago:

“The biggest challenge is to ensure that the pace of development is accompanied by a corresponding quality of experience and services. Luxury today is not defined only by design, architecture or the level of investment. The modern luxury traveller seeks authenticity, personalisation, impeccable service, privacy and experiences with a genuine connection to the destination. At the same time, as the Athens Riviera gains increasing international exposure, expectations are also rising. We are no longer competing only with other Greek destinations but also with other established destinations. Therefore, the challenge for all of us is to create a high-standard ecosystem across the entire experience chain – from hotels and dining to transportation, retail, yachting, culture and services.”

And when it comes to what sets a hospitality business apart as a model of excellence, her answer does not focus on buildings: “For me, true excellence in hospitality lies mainly in consistency. An impressive product can create a first impression, but what creates real value and loyalty is an experience that remains exceptional at every interaction with the guest. I would highlight five key elements: quality and consistency of service, authenticity, personalisation, innovation and, above all, people. In luxury hospitality, the difference is very often found in the details: in anticipating a need before it is expressed, knowing the guest without becoming intrusive and creating moments that do not feel pre-planned. Luxury does not simply mean more; it means better, more personal and more meaningful.”

Twelve months of momentum, and an institution for the entire Riviera

As for the opportunities opening up in the coming years, she sees something beyond a single hotel:

“The greatest opportunity is for the Athens Riviera to evolve from an exceptional seaside area into an internationally recognised, standalone luxury destination with almost year-round potential. Athens’ climate allows us to significantly extend the season and develop different segments beyond traditional summer leisure: wellness, gastronomy, yachting, luxury retail, high-end events, weddings, corporate retreats, long stays and multigenerational travel. I believe, however, that the next major step is collaboration at destination level. Hotels, restaurants, marinas, luxury retail, cultural organisations and local authorities need to operate more as a single ecosystem. Because ultimately, the international visitor is not buying only a hotel or a restaurant – they are buying the experience of the Athens Riviera as a whole.”

That is precisely why, she says, her participation on the judging panel of the inaugural Athens Riviera Luxury Awards matters: “It is a particular honour and pleasure to participate on the judging panel of the inaugural Athens Riviera Luxury Awards, especially at a time when the Athens Riviera is shaping its new identity and claiming the place it deserves on the international luxury travel map. For me, the Awards should not simply be a recognition of the best. They can act as a catalyst for the evolution of the Athens Riviera, highlighting businesses and people who invest in quality, innovation, authenticity and the creation of truly exceptional experiences. And perhaps this is the most important thing: the success of a luxury destination is not built by a single business or a major brand. It is built collectively. The higher the overall level of the Riviera rises, the stronger Athens’ position becomes on the global map of luxury hospitality.”

More than twenty years after taking her first step in the Greek market, Gauthier is back here, only now her gaze is no longer looking at Greece from the inside out, but at the whole world from the Athens Riviera outward. Few people know better than she does how far a destination can go when it decides to play in the big leagues, because she has seen them all up close, one by one.

Before taking the helm of the commercial strategy at One&Only Aesthesis, Anna Gauthier had worked in Johannesburg, across nine countries in Africa and the Indian Ocean, and in Paris, representing more than 550 luxury hotels worldwide.
