South Athens is facing the biggest urban and developmental change of the last decades. The new Athens Riviera, centered on the investment in The Ellinikon, is creating a dynamic that goes beyond the boundaries of the region and concerns the country as a whole. The coastal front is being transformed into a modern international destination, with new infrastructure, more greenery, a better quality of life and significant prospects for economic and social development.<\/p>\n
In this transition, Local Government cannot have the role of a spectator. Municipalities must plan, demand and ensure that development will not remain only in large projects and investments, but will return to society, to everyday life, to the needs of citizens.<\/p>\n
In the Municipality of Hellinikon \u2013 Argyroupolis, we supported the investment in The Ellinikon from the very beginning, because we believe that it can definitively change the image of our region and the country. At the same time, however, we have given and continue to give a firm fight for substantial reciprocal benefits. With persistence and systematic advocacy, we secured the ownership of 164,000 sq m and 33 plots of land for public and social infrastructure, strengthening municipal property and creating projects for future generations.<\/p>\n
The new state-of-the-art building for the disabled is already in operation, while the new sports center, the municipal nursing home, the new City Hall and important social facilities are progressing. At the same time, the municipality is acquiring its own coastal front for the first time, through the regeneration of Agios Kosmas beach and the creation of new public spaces. This development is not merely an urban planning matter; it constitutes a change of identity for a city that gains access, breath and perspective by the sea.<\/p>\n
The crucial challenge is for development to remain balanced, people-centred and functional. Traffic, transportation, infrastructure and sustainability require constant pressure to and cooperation with the State. The new Riviera must become a profit for all, not a privilege for the few.<\/p>\n
