In every development project that concerns the present and future of the city and our citizens, our central mission is to ensure that development will be sustainable and balanced. In other words, the developments that are underway will bring a new everyday life for all citizens that will be as good as -or even better than- the one today.<\/p>\n
Often, in Greece, investment projects are designed by the State or private investors without taking into account their interaction with the already existing city or with the neighboring projects of other investors. This creates a \u201cmosaic\u201d of interventions that are not connected to each other by a single master plan. This carries the risk of causing adverse side effects for the quality of life of citizens, but also for the functionality of the investments themselves.<\/p>\n
We, the local authorities, are called upon to manage this situation in practice, in order to ensure the quality of life of residents, the minimization of externalities from the projects during their execution phase, but also the sustainable coexistence of all new uses with each other and with the city, immediately after their completion. And, of course, the connection of investments with the local community and the extraction of benefits from them for the entire region, so that there is a diffusion of benefits throughout South Athens.<\/p>\n
This requires a culture of cooperation among the State, the Local Government and Investors, which unfortunately does not exist in our country. Thus, we often find ourselves in the unpleasant position of having to insist on issues such as excessive environmental burden, traffic and the carrying capacity of public infrastructure. In other words, we have to defend the obvious: that \u201cdevelopment\u201d is not simply about building as if there were no tomorrow, but also about reminding of the fact that infrastructure (roads, public utility networks, etc.) cannot serve an infinite number of people (residents and tourists) in perpetuity, without its constant upgrading and timely planning for it.<\/p>\n
Maintaining quality and functionality in everything we do, the harmonious connection of the new with the old, safeguarding our identity and at the same time \u201copening up\u201d to new horizons is a difficult equation that we are called upon to solve daily, so that our cities will be able to proudly move forward.<\/p>\n
