George Amerikanos can move within the same conversation from James Harden and podcasts with EuroLeague players to the sea in Vouliagmeni, from the way he approaches a player for an interview to how nightlife in the Southern Suburbs of Athens changed after the financial crisis, and from there to a strange comment he once heard about his content and, instead of forgetting it, kept it as fuel.<\/p>\n

That is more or less how he operates too. Fast-paced, outgoing and without much of a filter, with clear American influences in the way he approaches sports content, but also with a relationship with Greece\u2014and especially the Southern Suburbs\u2014that seems to have grown stronger the more time he spent away from them.<\/p>\n

Today, he is in front of the camera, openly expresses his views and has connected his name with a particular way of discussing sports. For years, however, the person behind all this was not the face of the brand at all.<\/p>\n

From an anonymous brand to American sports<\/h2>\n

The story began in 2015, when he created the Amerikanos24<\/a> website with a very specific identity: specializing in American sports, at a time when this type of content had a much smaller presence in Greek sports media. \u201cThat was our competitive advantage compared with all the other media outlets,\u201d<\/em> he recalls.<\/p>\n

And for quite a few years, he essentially remained behind it. The brand had developed its own presence without him needing to be its public face.<\/p>\n

The specialization, however, gradually began to build an audience. People realized that they could find information there that was not available elsewhere, and along with the audience, the original idea also began to evolve.<\/p>\n

The next step was video. Amerikanos did not simply want to bring to camera what was already being done in traditional sports media. He wanted to create a debate show around which the identity of the channel could be built. Then came the podcasts. The first season of the \u201cOver play show\u201d was produced via Zoom, at a time when the format had not yet taken over Greek YouTube. \u201cWe showed the market how easy it is to make a podcast,\u201d<\/em> he says.<\/p>\n

In the years that followed, the shows multiplied. For him, this is not a problem. The fact that someone can now create their own content with a webcam and a microphone is part of the evolution of the medium. Easy access to technology, however, does not automatically mean interesting content. And that is where, for him, the real differentiation begins.<\/p>\n

From the debate show to NBAers and the players behind the microphone<\/h2>\n

One of the most important parts of his work is his direct interaction with the athletes themselves. His comfort with the English language and American culture could easily be considered the \u201csecret\u201d behind this relationship. He believes it is only one part of it. \u201cI think people believe that English is what makes the difference. It certainly makes Americans feel more comfortable. But understanding the sport plays a huge role. If we simply spoke good English without understanding basketball, we still wouldn\u2019t have good conversations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

There is, however, something that comes even before knowledge. \u201cIt all starts with recognizing that we are all human beings. Whether someone is Greek or American, the other person may be tired one day, may not want to talk. You start with respect for the person and then you approach them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Amerikanos covered the NBA before becoming more deeply involved in the day-to-day world of the EuroLeague. That background also gave him a different approach to interviews. He is not interested only in the superstar or the obvious question of the day. He vividly remembers an interview with James Harden. At one point, he asked him about a player much lower down the rotation. The Americans around them started reacting to one another, wondering how he knew that particular detail. For him, that is where much of the difference lies. Knowledge makes the athlete understand that sitting across from them is not simply someone who speaks good English, but someone who knows the world in which they operate.<\/p>\n\r\n\r\n
