Today, the picture is different. Most large
companies have set goals, identified priorities, adapted to new regulatory frameworks and market demands, and have proceeded to publish their relevant performance.

The question has changed. It is not what strategy a company should follow. It is how it will manage to implement it.

Strategy is not the biggest obstacle

It is interesting that the term “strategy” is often used in a different way. For some, it describes where a company wants to go – its ambitions, commitments and goals. For others, it describes how to get there – the choices, the priorities and the action plan. In sustainable development, this distinction is particularly important. We often confuse strategy
with ambition. Goals, however ambitious they may be, are not a strategy in themselves. They are a destination. Strategy is how a company chooses to get there. And this is where the biggest challenge lies.

It is not uncommon to find companies with ambitious climate goals and specific action plans that do not substantially influence the way day-to-day business decisions are made. Despite commitments to responsible sourcing and reduction of the environmental footprint, sustainability criteria are rarely integrated effectively into the final evaluation and selection of suppliers.

The commitments remain at headquarters. The operating units continue to operate as before. Day to-day priorities prevail. And sustainability ends up being treated as a side initiative, rather than part of how the business operates. This creates a gap, not of intent, but of implementation.

When sustainability really becomes part of the business

More and more companies today know what they need to do. The issue is no longer a lack of knowledge or information. The real question is how strategy is translated into daily decisions. The answer lies in the extent to which sustainability influences the decisions that determine the course of the business.

In many cases, ESG remains mainly associated with corporate disclosures and meeting regulatory requirements. Sometimes it is limited to a small group of executives who are asked to promote an agenda without having the necessary levers of influence.

But true integration begins when sustainabili ty principles influence the decisions that shape the course of a business, from product development and supplier selection to capital allocation, risk management and human resource priorities. Otherwise, they remain a parallel narrative.

Implementation means changing the way in which a company operates

Implementation is not just another project with a beginning and an end. It is a change in the way an organization operates.

It shows in the investment decisions that are made. In the way a company manages its supply chain. In the choices it makes regarding the efficiency of its operations. In the way it assesses opportunities and risks.

In other words, sustainability takes on real meaning when it enters the difficult managerial dilemmas and inevitable trade-offs that every management faces: Short-term cost or long-term value? Speed or resilience? Lower price or a more responsible supply chain? Not when a company declares that it has a strategy to address climate change. But when that strategy impacts where the company invests, how it sources, how it operates, and how it grows. That’s where real value starts to be created.

Why many efforts “get stuck”

Market experience shows that, despite the will and commitments, many efforts do not progress with the speed or depth that is required. There is often a lack of clear accountability for the outcome. ESG “belongs to everyone” and ultimately belongs to no one.

Sometimes sustainability runs alongside core business processes, rather than being part of them. In other cases, the relevant objectives are not linked to the evaluation and performance of executives. And, often, teams know what needs to be done, but not how to implement it in practice. Ultimately, the issue is not the intention. It is the structure, mechanisms and the ability to implement.

What sets those who succeed at it apart

In contrast, organizations that manage to turn commitments into results are not necessarily those with the most ambitious goals. They are those that have managed to integrate sustainability into the way they manage, decide and allocate resources.

While every organization is unique, those that succeed in turning commitments into results seem to share three common characteristics: they integrate sustainability into decision-making, create clear accountability for results, and track progress through a few but meaningful indicators.

These companies do not treat sustainability as an obligation. They use it as a tool for better management and decision-making.

The new competitive advantage The market has moved to a new level of maturity. The commitments have been made and the direction is largely known. The critical question is not whether there is a strategy. It is whether it can be implemented. The organizations that stand out today are not those with the most ambitious commitments. They are those that have managed to turn sustainability into part of the way they manage, invest, and grow. In an era where commitments are the starting point rather than the goal, the real competitive advantage lies in the ability to implement them.

Published in “White Paper: The Greater Riviera”, NouPou Media’s special edition spotlighting the future of coastal Attica.

A few years ago, the discussion around sustainability and ESG revolved around the question of “what exactly they mean for a company”.
