5 bakeries in the southern suburbs we keep coming back to
- 24/07/2025 14:49
Specialty breads, irresistible croissants, sweet treats and snacks: these are the bakeries we love in the southern suburbs of Athens—the ones that become a daily habit, all year round. Here's a short but satisfying list.
There are bakeries, and then there are bakeries. The kind you run into for a last-minute loaf, and the kind that become a daily ritual. Where the aroma of fresh-baked bread draws you in from the sidewalk, where doughs rise slowly and croissants crackle before you even bite into them. Across the Athens Riviera, there’s no shortage of bakeries that marry the craft of breadmaking with the creativity of a small bistro. Here are our favorites.
Paul, Glyfada
In the heart of Glyfada, PAUL brings French bakery culture in its most authentic and elegant form. Since 1889, PAUL bakeries have been making baked goods with traditional recipes and high-quality ingredients. At the PAUL shop in Glyfada, you can enjoy freshly baked sourdough bread, crispy baguettes, mouthwatering viennoiseries, and signature pastries, all crafted with savoir-faire straight from France.
Signature offerings like the pain nordique moule (a high-nutrient multigrain bread with malt) or pain noix moule (walnut loaf), French pastries and tarts such as macarons, éclairs, flan normand, the distinctive mille-feuille napoléon with just two crisp layers and blackberry-infused pastry cream, and the irresistible Basque cheesecake are just some of the reasons to visit PAUL.
Captain’s Bakery, Alimos
A wide variety of baked goods to suit every taste is made fresh daily at this beloved bakery on Kalamakiou Avenue, where top-quality ingredients and craftsmanship are the recipe for success.
You’ll find cookies, tsoureki, puff pastries, a large selection of healthy and specialty breads, and pretty much anything else you can think of—fresh and aromatic every morning. Captain’s Bakery also offers a selection of sweet treats, from jarred profiteroles and family-size cakes to syrupy tray-baked desserts and giftable sweets for any occasion.
La Linda, Glyfada
In La Linda’s displays you’ll find a range of delicacies, like the fluffy bizcochos, which resemble small filled puff pastries, and alfajor cookies with vanilla or chocolate filling. Next to them are the famous empanadas—our pick is the one filled with spinach pie-style filling—and the Rojel, a dessert reminiscent of mille-feuille, made with dulce de leche, milk caramel and burnt meringue, all sure to catch your eye. On the shelves in the back, the house breads are ready—five different sourdough varieties are baked here.
Exi Bakery, Ilioupoli – Glyfada – Voula
Exi is not just about the coffee. Each location offers a wide variety of baked goods, croissants, homemade-style pies, energy bars, sandwiches, and light lunch options to-go. If you ask us, we have a few must-haves: kourou cheese pies and spinach pies, sausage-filled pirozhki, cinnamon or beetroot breadsticks, a multigrain baguette with chicken for a complete meal, and, of course, lychnarakia (sweet cheese pastries) for a sweet ending.
