Everyone has their go-to restaurants, cafés, and bars for every occasion. A café for Saturday morning coffee with friends, one or two relaxed bars for first dates, and a few restaurants depending on appetite and mood.
Among all these, there are also those places we choose not just for the food but mainly because we want to meet our friends and have a good time. They’re the kind of spots without two-hour sittings, where you can linger for hours, chatting and saying every so often: “Another tsipouro and an apaki, please.”
One such place is Radiourgies in Petralona, just above Panagi Tsaldari. If you head up Koilis Street, you’ll find it on the right-hand side. The space doesn’t impress at first glance, but it’s simple, well-kept, with tables and chairs that invite you to settle in. Each table is its own little world: couples on early dates, families, and of course groups of friends with years of shared memories.
The dishes come and go with familiar flavors – nothing excessive or complicated. In the middle of the table you’ll find the “Radiourgies” salad, a Greek salad with carob rusk and vinaigrette, tzatziki and tyrokafteri for those essential dips with potatoes and bread.
From the meze that keep the table lively, highlights include the pleurotus mushrooms with curry and cumin, the apaki with fresh spring onion, and the Metsovian-style chicken with smoked cheese sauce. The beef liver, melt-in-your-mouth and served with fava, is also worth trying. Chicken meatballs come with pasta, while more “classic choices” include the milk-fed veal steak, pork chop, and chicken souvlaki. The pork knuckle, on the other hand, is slow-cooked until perfectly tender.
At Radiourgies, as we said, you don’t come only for the food but also for the easygoing, friendly vibe. It’s one of those mezedopoleia that make you feel at home, that let you talk about everything: from work and love to politics when you want to stir things up a little.
The food is there to accompany the moments. And in the end, aren’t those the things that matter most?
