The Mayor of Glyfada writes in White Paper about the Greater Riviera taking shape today and the role of local government in the new identity of South Athens.

In recent years, the development of the Athens Riviera has become a constant point of reference for the country as a whole. Visionary projects, from Faliro Bay and The Ellinikon to Asteria in Glyfada and Sounio, are transforming Southern Attica. Our own Riviera is rapidly transforming into a destination on par with those of France, Italy, and Spain.
This rapid development, however, creates massive challenges. The influx of thousands of new residents and visitors raises pressing issues regarding infrastructure, waste management, and, primarily, traffic congestion.
The road network is already severely congested and insufficient. The Mount Hymettus tunnel, the grade-separated interchanges on Vouliagmenis Avenue, and the extension of the Metro must be urgently set in motion.
The challenge for Local Government is balanced and sustainable development. It is our firm position that new investments must be integrated into the community and not become “gated” areas. We are concerned by the delays in The Ellinikon and the lack of a timetable for the delivery of free green spaces.
Furthermore, unilateral changes to the initial planning pose risks of overburdening neighboring areas, which is why the Municipality of Glyfada and the Municipality of Alimos have taken legal action.
In Glyfada, we respond to challenges with tangible public works. We are completing the holistic regeneration of our coastal front with a unified pedestrian walkway, a 4.5 km bicycle path, and modern sports facilities.
In contrast to expensive organized beaches, our “Blue Flag” awarded coastal front remains free and a top choice, with complimentary amenities for everyone.
At the same time, we are addressing the parking issue by constructing underground facilities and initiating the creation of a grand Esplanade, a new landmark that will organically connect the beach with our commercial center.
From the sea to the mountain, we are moving for ward with urban regenerations, roadworks, and innovative supra-local infrastructure, such as the model special education school and, soon, the municipal nursing home.
As a Municipal Authority, we proceed with vision and determination, balancing development with our residential identity, and handing over to future generations a model city—a truly human-centred and welcoming place for all.
