Legraina is one of the locals’ favorite destinations for dining outside the city center, especially after a swim at the beaches towards Sounion or a visit to the Temple of Poseidon. That’s how to end the day right! There are three taverns in the area that are worth a stop, and they are open year-round, so you have all the time in the world to visit them.
Marida
Fresh marida fish, marinated anchovies, fried calamari, shrimp with orzo, and many other seafood meze dishes, with the sea as a backdrop, place Marida at the top of the choices for a stop near Sounion. The historic tavern in Legraina, operating since 1930 in the area, offers freshly caught seafood directly from the local fishermen’s boats.
Simple, unpretentious, and traditional, but above all, quality dishes fill the menu. Note that you’ll find whatever fresh fish was caught that day, but if you come across some red mullet, definitely give it a try. It’s worth pairing your meal with a glass of white wine. And you can enjoy all this either in the charming courtyard that offers ample shade or on the small balcony with a distant view of the sea.
Thodoros and Eleni
Here, you’ll enjoy the most delicious mussels in Attica. They arrive at your table quickly, fresh, steaming, and drenched in a velvety feta sauce. One piece of advice: be ready to get your hands dirty!
Despite not being located on the seaside road and not being easy to spot, the restaurant has built a great reputation. You won’t just find classic seafood dishes here; instead, you’ll discover an intriguing menu with various options. Among the must-tries, besides the mussels, we’d recommend the handmade carrot gnocchi with shrimp and of course, the fresh fish—depending on what the fisherman has caught that day. Complete your meal with the right traditional Greek spirit, as the restaurant boasts a rich collection of tsipouro and ouzo.
Stamatis
The rich bougainvilleas that color the taverna and are visible even from the coastal road, are the trademark of Stamatis, and catch the eye of every driver on one of the most beautiful and picturesque routes in Attica.
Stamatis, the traditional taverna that has stood in the same spot in Legraina since 1995 and offers quality seafood meze to its visitors, is one of the locals’ favorite restaurants for seafood. Here, you’ll find fresh fish, calamari, octopus, and many seafood treasures from the local fishermen. The menu includes a variety of food options as well as different traditional Greek spirits to accompany your dish.
Extra Tip: If you visit the taverna at sunset, be sure to grab a spot on the large terrace, which offers a wonderful panoramic view extending to the sea.
